Intellectual Property
Trademarks, patents, copyright and technology-related IP protection in Cameroon and the OAPI region.
Overview
Intellectual property protection in Cameroon operates within a distinctive regional system. Cameroon is a member of OAPI — the African Intellectual Property Organization, headquartered in Yaoundé — under which a single filing of a trademark, patent or industrial design produces protection automatically effective across all member states under the Bangui Agreement (as revised). Copyright and related rights are governed by national law, alongside the data protection obligations that increasingly accompany technology and marketing activity. ALPs advises on securing, exploiting and defending IP rights in this environment: choosing the right filing route, drafting licences that hold up, and acting against infringement.

Frequently asked questions
How do I protect a trademark in Cameroon?
Cameroon is a member of OAPI (the African Intellectual Property Organization, based in Yaoundé). A trademark registered with OAPI under the Bangui Agreement receives protection across all member states through a single filing, without separate national registration. Registration is renewable indefinitely in ten-year periods. We manage availability searches, filings, renewals and enforcement for clients across the region.
Is copyright protected automatically in Cameroon?
Copyright arises automatically on creation under Cameroon’s national copyright and neighbouring rights framework, without registration. In practice, however, proof of authorship, ownership chains and contractual arrangements with creators matter greatly in disputes — so we advise clients to document rights properly, particularly for works created by employees, contractors and third parties.
